For the first time, honey from Assam's aspirational district of Baksa has been exported to the United States under the Indian government's One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. This consignment of approximately 20 metric tons of honey was dispatched on May 9th. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The export was carried out by Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd., an APEDA-registered exporter. The honey was processed and packaged at the company's processing unit in Guwahati, after which it was shipped to the United States.
Assam has huge potential for honey production
According to the state government, Assam has significant potential for honey production due to its dense forests, rich biodiversity, and traditional beekeeping.
Tribes like the Karbi, Mishing, and Bodo have been collecting honey for centuries. These communities use honey for food, medicine, and religious purposes.
The districts of Baksa, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, and Tamulpur in Assam are considered major honey-producing centers. In FY 2023-24, Assam produced approximately 1,650 metric tons of honey.
