New Labor Codes: Today marks a day of significant change for the corporate world and working professionals. The four new labor codes have come into full effect across the country today, May 9th.

Work only a maximum of 48 hours a week

Under the new rules, working hours have been limited. No employee can be required to work more than 48 hours a week.

This means that the arbitrariness of working hours in different industries will now be put to an end. Furthermore, it has become legally mandatory for companies to provide at least one day of weekly leave.

Extra work, extra money

It's common for companies to keep employees working after their shifts are over, with no financial benefits in return.

The new labor codes have disrupted this system. Now, if an employer requires you to work beyond the stipulated 48 hours, they will have to pay overtime. This means that any extra work you do will no longer be free.

Appointment letter is no longer an option

In small industries or the unorganized sector, people are hired without any written agreement, making it easy to fire them at any time. The government has closed this loophole.

Under the rules, every employer must now provide an appointment letter when hiring a worker. This will bring transparency between the worker and the company and increase the guarantee of job security.

Paving the way for 'Ease of Doing Business'

These rules aren't just for employees. They're also a major relief for companies and industrialists. Previously, HR and compliance teams had to process paperwork according to 29 different laws.

Now, they've been reduced to just four codes. This will reduce paperwork, minimize legal complications, and directly boost the ease of doing business in the country.

The ball is also in the court of the states

You may recall that the basic framework for these four labor codes was in place on November 21, 2025, but due to pending complex regulations, it hadn't been fully implemented.

Now, the central government has implemented it through a gazette notification. However, labor is a subject on the Concurrent List.

This means that, after the central government, state governments will now have to notify these rules at their own level. According to officials, this process may take some more time for the states, but the new system has received the green light from the central government.
