Central government employees awaiting the 8th Pay Commission may be in for a surprise. Employee organizations have demanded the government increase the "fitment factor" to 3.83. 8th Pay Commission: Millions of central government employees are now fully focused on the 8th Pay Commission. If the recent demands of employee organizations are accepted, salaries of everyone from peons to top-ranking IAS officers in government offices could see a significant increase.
" "It is estimated that the current minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 could rise to ₹69,000 under the new system. Let's understand this entire calculation in detail.
What is the game of 3.83 fitment factor?
Recently, an important meeting of the staff side of the National Council (JCM) was held in New Delhi between April 28th and 30th. At this meeting, a major demand was placed before the government.
The employees clearly argued that the current pay structure is proving inadequate given the rapidly rising inflation and the exorbitant cost of living in metropolitan cities. Therefore, a reform of the pay structure is necessary.

At the heart of this entire change is the "fitment factor." Simply put, it's the formula used to determine a government employee's new basic salary. You'll recall that it was set at 2.57 in the 7th Pay Commission.
Now, employee organizations are strongly demanding that the government increase this fitment factor to 3.83 in the 8th Pay Commission. If the government approves this figure, the current minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 will jump to approximately ₹68,940.
Significantly, this will not only benefit serving employees, but will also significantly increase the pensions of retired employees, as pensions are directly linked to basic pay.
From peon to clerk... how much will the increase be?
If the 3.83 formula is agreed upon, salaries will increase significantly depending on the pay level. Let's start with Level 1, which includes positions like peons and attendants. Their current basic pay will rise from ₹18,000 to around ₹69,000. Similarly, the salary of a Lower Division Clerk (Level 2) will jump from ₹19,900 to around ₹76,000.
For constables and skilled workers (Level 3), their basic pay could rise from ₹21,700 to ₹83,000, and for junior clerks or Grade D stenographers (Level 4) from ₹25,500 to ₹97,000.
This is a jackpot for mid-level employees as well. While Level 6 salaries could range from ₹35,400 to ₹1.35 lakh, Level 7 officers are projected to see their basic pay rise from ₹44,900 to ₹1.72 lakh.
How much will the salary of senior officers increase?
This bumper salary increase won't be limited to the lower levels. The salaries of senior officials and top bureaucrats (such as IAS officers) will also reach new heights.
For example, the salaries of Level 13 officers could rise from ₹1.23 lakh to ₹4.71 lakh, and the top-ranking officer, Level 18, could see a jump from ₹2.50 lakh to ₹9.57 lakh.
